Angilock, which contains losartan potassium, is an oral antihypertensive medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It functions by selectively antagonizing the AT1 receptor, thereby blocking the vasoconstricting and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II. By promoting vasodilation and reducing salt and water retention, it effectively lowers blood pressure and decreases the workload on the heart. Beyond hypertension, losartan is clinically indicated for reducing stroke risk in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy and for providing renal protection in individuals with type 2 diabetes by slowing the progression of diabetic nephropathy. While it is often preferred over ACE inhibitors due to a lower incidence of dry cough, it must be avoided during pregnancy and requires careful monitoring for potential side effects like hyperkalemia or dizziness.
