Rolac is a potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which contains ketorolac tromethamine, primarily used for the short-term management of moderate to severe acute pain that would otherwise require opioids. Unlike many other NSAIDs, it is distinguished by its powerful analgesic properties, which outweigh its anti-inflammatory effects. It works by non-selectively inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, thereby blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins that mediate pain, fever, and inflammation. Because of its high potency and the associated risk of serious side effects—such as gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, and renal impairment—its use is strictly limited to a maximum of five days. It is commonly administered post-operatively via intramuscular or intravenous injection, though oral and intranasal formulations are also available for follow-up treatment. Ketorolac is contraindicated in patients with active peptic ulcer disease, severe renal impairment, or a high risk of bleeding, and it should not be used for minor or chronic painful conditions.
