Bactrocin contains Mupirocin, which is a unique topical antibiotic derived from Pseudomonas fluorescens, primarily used to treat skin infections such as impetigo and secondary bacterial infections like folliculitis. It exerts its bacteriostatic effect at low concentrations and bactericidal effect at high concentrations by reversibly binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. This distinct mechanism of action means there is minimal cross-resistance with other clinical antibiotics, making it highly effective against Gram-positive pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. While it is a staple for eradicating methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) colonization in the nasal passages, its use is strictly topical to avoid rapid systemic metabolism into the inactive monic acid.
