Indications:
Anaflex Max is used for relief of symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. It also helps reduce the risk of NSAID-associated gastric ulcers in at-risk patients.
Pharmacology:
This is a combination of naproxen (NSAID) and esomeprazole (proton pump inhibitor). Naproxen reduces pain and inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, while esomeprazole decreases stomach acid production, helping protect against gastric ulcers.
Dosage and Administration:
Adults: One tablet twice daily (375 mg/20 mg or 500 mg/20 mg).
Adolescents (≥12 years): Dose based on body weight.
Take at least 30 minutes before meals. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
Drug Interactions:
May reduce the effect of antihypertensive drugs. Increased risk of bleeding with warfarin. Esomeprazole may affect absorption of drugs like ketoconazole, iron and digoxin.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in hypersensitivity, history of NSAID-induced asthma or allergy, and during perioperative CABG surgery.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia and diarrhea. Serious risks include gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, cardiovascular events, edema and hypertension.
Pregnancy and Lactation:
Avoid during third trimester. Use in early pregnancy only if necessary. Not recommended during breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings:
Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. Monitor for GI bleeding, cardiovascular risk and kidney function. Use cautiously in elderly and patients with liver, kidney or heart disease.
Overdose Effects:
Symptoms may include nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain, GI bleeding and drowsiness. Treatment is supportive.
