**Active Composition & Class**
* **Active Ingredient:** Ambroxol Hydrochloride (active metabolite of bromhexine)
* **Therapeutic Class:** Cough expectorant & mucolytic
**Indications**
* Productive cough with viscid (thick) mucus.
* Acute and chronic upper and lower respiratory tract inflammatory conditions (e.g., acute and chronic bronchitis, asthmatic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, chronic pneumonia).
* Inflammatory diseases of the rhinopharyngeal tract (e.g., laryngitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, rhinitis) accompanied by thick secretion.
**Mechanism of Action**
* **Mucolytic Action:** Liquefies and thins viscous mucus in the respiratory tract to facilitate expectoration and reduce dyspnea.
* **Surfactant Stimulation:** Promotes phospholipid surfactant production in alveolar cells, lowering alveolar surface tension.
* **Anti-inflammatory:** Inhibits cellular cytokine and arachidonic acid metabolite production while reducing bronchial hyperreactivity and improving airway patency in COPD.
**Dosage & Administration**
* **Pediatric Drops (0–2 years):**
* *0–6 months:* 0.5 ml twice daily.
* *6–12 months:* 1 ml twice daily.
* *1–2 years:* 1.25 ml twice daily.
* **Syrup (2+ years and Adults):**
* *2–5 years:* 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoonful) 2–3 times daily.
* *5–10 years:* 5 ml (1 teaspoonful) 2–3 times daily.
* *Over 10 years & Adults:* 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) 3 times daily.
* **Sustained Release Capsule:** Adults and children over 12 years: 1 capsule once daily.
* **Administration:** Preferably taken after meals. Use strictly under a registered physician's guidance.
**Contraindications & Precautions**
* **Contraindications:** Known hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or Bromhexine.
* **Warnings & Precautions:** Use with caution in patients with active gastric or duodenal ulcers, convulsive disorders, or hepatic and renal insufficiency.
**Side Effects & Drug Interactions**
* **Side Effects:** Occasional epigastric pain or feeling of stomach fullness. Rare allergic reactions include skin eruptions, urticaria, or angioneurotic edema.
* **Drug Interactions:** Avoid co-administration with antitussives (e.g., Codeine), as suppressing the cough reflex prevents the clearance of liquefied phlegm.
**Pregnancy, Lactation & Storage**
* **Pregnancy & Lactation:** Not recommended during pregnancy (especially the 1st trimester). Safety during lactation has not been established.
* **Storage:** Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
